Australian Reptile Park Venom Program

The collection of venom from deadly species of snakes and spiders is used to manufacture the only Australian antivenoms that save human snake bite and spider bite victims.

Scott’s dedication to Funnel Web spiders and to the milking program plays a critical role towards the venoms required by BioCSL Limited for the production of antivenoms for terrestrial snakes and funnel-web spiders.

Public Education (Snake Safety & Awareness)

“In my early years as a snake catcher and online educator, I realised how disconnected most people are from the natural world. So many people needlessly fear, and even hate, snakes simply due to a lack of understanding. Therefore, I use my images, footage, and specific knowledge of snakes to help people interpret snake behaviour, reduce their fear and understand their function in the environment. If I can help the public to understand and appreciate these extraordinary animals even a fraction of what I do, then I will consider my efforts well rewarded.”

Ray is the owner/operator of OzStyle Reptiles, and is an experienced reptile handler covering the Southern Highlands (NSW) and surrounds.

Ray has been keeping reptiles for over 32 years. From the age of six, he has been interested in everything reptilian.

Growing up in the Illawarra South Coast of NSW influenced his evolving interest in herpetology.  As Ray’s experience developed, he began to breed various reptiles at home and hence earned the nickname of “Snakey”.

After joining his local reptile rehabilitation group, he learned to care for rescued, sick, or injured reptiles and has continued to do this for over twenty years.

Ray loves what he does and has recently taken on the additional role of reptile educator, teaching various community groups about the important place that snakes inhabit in our ecosystem as well as conducting safety awareness workshops and supplying reptile equipment, accessories, and food to other reptile enthusiasts.

Ray also collects funnel-web spiders for venom supplies in SA for their venom programs.

And, as well as all the above, Ray is an avid wildlife photographer and has donated many of his snake collections to the Critterpedia project.

Capturing the wild side of life…

“I was born and raised in Switzerland and moved to Brisbane, Australia over 15 years ago. My passion for photography was probably handed down to me by my dad. He photographed wildlife for decades before I invested in my first DSLR camera. I practiced long exposure photography after discovering Light Painting Photography. I dedicated many hours in the dark to the art of creating light sculptures with the help of long exposures.

My passion is wildlife photography and I hope I can bring the beauty of nature into your home and show how amazing nature is. Every single animal needs our protection as they all play an important part in our survival. There is an abundance of scientific reports telling us that the rate of extinction is happening at an alarming rate. More and more fauna and flora are going to disappear. With my wildlife photography, I hope to showcase a fraction of animals before they are gone.

Only what you know, you will love and protect…”

Iska’s involvement in Entomology is purely a hobby, but one he loves and that started when he was a child rescuing animals and bugs from his family pool. World-first Species Interaction!

In 2018, Laurence witnessed an unusual species interaction between a leafcutter bee and a wolf spider.

Laurence’s images show a leafcutter bee and a predatory wolf spider sharing and interacting in the same burrow, showing no aggression towards one another.

Laurence’s information was fed into the Atlas of Living Australia’s (ALA) database.  Dr Ken Walker, Senior Curator of Entomology at Museums Victoria, confirmed the images Laurence captured were a world-first, also stating, “Laurence’s observation showcases the value that ALA’s digital infrastructure and citizen scientists can make to biodiversity research and species discovery.”
